Sometime back, former Performancing editor James Mowery published started a feature called the Weekly Buzz, which highlighted discussions on our members-only Performancing Hive forum (and what was previously Performancing Fuzz). Most, if not all, our Hive members are accomplished pros in blogging and other online businesses. And with this, we get to shoot questions and ideas back and forth, and in the process we learn more and more, and we get help on how to execute these ideas better.
While we would like everyone to learn a thing or two or three from these wonderful folks, we know not everyone is ready to subscribe to a premium service. And so, I’m happy to tell you about a new regular feature we will have on Performancing called Ask Performancing.
Each week, I will pick a couple of reader questions–whether sent in by email, posted on comment threads, or on the community forum–and post these on the Hive for discussion by the members. These would include questions on how to enhance blogging productivity, how to improve earnings, and other such topics that everyone would benefit from. And then once a week–during Wednesdays–I will be posting a brief summary of the discussion, which I hope would be helpful to both the submitter of the question and every other reader.
Of course I would not necessarily post the entirety of a discussion, as that would dilute the value of a Performancing Hive membership (which only costs $10 per month, by the way). But rather I will highlight an adequate sampling of the discussion, such that it would be helpful, but at the same time, generate some interest in what the Hive has to offer.
And so, let’s open the floor to questions for this week’s Ask Performancing. I’ll pick a few good ones by this weekend, post it on the Hive, and publish my first summary this Wednesday, November 19th.
It’s time for change, and I’m not talking about the 2008 Democratic ticket. It’s something closer to home–right here at Performancing.
I’m pleased to announce that I have been given the assignment of managing Performancing effective November 1st. Ryan Caldwell, whom we consider to be one of the strong foundations of the community, has decided to focus on pursuing other projects. While, arguably, Performancing could carry on by itself as a community, Splashpress Media (which owns Performancing and its various services) feels that Performancing would benefit more from a refocusing of efforts, talent and energies toward a more active community and a unified portal for this community.
I mentioned change earlier and so far, reader feedback has been optimistic. I do have several plans laid out, such as a possible redesign and restructuring of our sites and services. And perhaps we can bring back some features that were previously in place. Now, here’s your chance to be part of the planning process. What do you think should we do to better adhere to our motto of helping bloggers succeed? Should we build more plugins? Create more free themes? Venture into new blogging-related services? Create a book?
We’re open to ideas!
In my excitement, I forgot to mention a few important points and an introduction (Thanks Brett for pointing that out).
Firstly, Jeff Chandler, who has been producing excellent content here, is staying on as lead contributor. He will be very much involved in planning (and executing) the various things we intend to have here. In this regard, I don’t think readers will think of the new editorship to be too drastic a change, since Jeff has been manning the ship for quite a while. Jeff and I will share top-billing in terms of writing and other content.
As for an introduction, I know I’ve made only a few posts here on Performancing to date, but I’ve mostly been involved in back-end work (i.e., some marketing, selling of ad space, and some tweaks here and there) since Splashpress acquired Performancing. You can mostly read my posts and features over at the Blog Herald, where I serve as assistant editor.
I do have a resume online, but it’s a bit outdated. I run my personal blog at racoma.net and my archives are at racoma.com.ph.

In typical analytical programs such as pMetrics, you’ll find one metric that is known as the “bounce rate“. This is usually measured as an average amount of time a user spends on your site. Some analytical programs even measure percentages of bounce rates depending on how many page views it takes for a unique visitor to leave the site.
Of course, having a lower bounce rate is much better than a higher rate which is a good reason to check out an article that was published over at the ConversionRateExperts site entitled 14 free tools that reveal why people abandon your website. The article takes an in depth look at a series of tools to not only identify why visitors are leaving your site so fast, but also to figure out how to get them to stick around longer.
The bounce rates on my blog tend to be pretty high as most of my site traffic leaves the blog within 1-5 page views. However, most of that is due to StumbleUpon traffic that is here today, gone tomorrow with no interest in browsing around the site anymore than they have to. Another factor that can contribute to a high bounce rate is search engine traffic. However, I tend to be confused as there are two ways in which to take with regards to the search engine angle. The first is that, people are searching and then finding my blog and they get it right on the first try. This means they get what they want, then they leave. The second angle is that, there are many people who are coming across my blog within the search engines and it doesn’t have what they were looking for so they move on. See how this is a slippery slope?
At any rate, the tools listed within that article should help to answer those types of questions. If you have any tips on how to decrease the bounce rate for blogs, let me know in the comments.
