It’s 2am in the morning, you’re tired and you can’t even look at your blog lest you find something else wrong with it. You give up and go to bed, only to find out that you can’t sleep because sleeping over it isn’t going to make things better – the problems will still be there tomorrow morning.
So you trudge back to your laptop and get down to work, except that you’re chatting on IM instead of working – and then someone tells you how cool your blog is, and it dawns on you: You have been too harsh on yourself and your blog, and instead of finding positive solutions and working on them, all you’ve been doing is focusing on what’s wrong and letting that eat you up inside.
Moral of the story: Whenever your blog or your blogging hits a dip (whether it’s a drop in motivation or traffic), don’t go Postal on your blog and everything that you’ve worked so hard to build up. Find out the reason why you’ve spent thousands of hours working on your blog, and why you got started in the first place. And then make sure you talk to the people who regularly read your blog and get their opinion on what they think of it.
Chances are, all you need is a supporting shoulder when you’re down, and nothing works better than your own readers telling you that your blog rocks and that you shouldn’t give up.
Thank you, dear reader 🙂

My blog continues to morph & evolve as I do. I’ve come to love that quality of blogging. Funny how now I want a website that does that too.

Gerard – that’s great, and if I may so bold as to suggest something – DO NOT LET UP!
If your blog is doing well, do not stop to pat yourself on the back or take your foot of the gas. All that accomplishes is sends your blog back down the hill while you rejoice – kind of like lighting fire to your newly built house and then dancing around it.
I’ve been in your place before and I love the feeling – as long as you keep working at it, it’ll stay with you.
Irene – thanks, and hope to see you here again.
Ahmed that was well put. Your comment is so on. Despite being a new blogger, I know the feeling well. I suspect many an entrepreneur has times when they feel exactly the same way. I haven’t found the rest of your blog, I just surfed in looking for something else, but I’ll be back. I don’t know the policy here about posting links to one’s own blog, but please drop by for a visit. http://www.inmyhands.wordpress.com Cheers.
I’m completely the opposite at the moment – I’m totally digging what I’m writing on my blog at the moment. Hits are on the increase, as are subscribers. I’m putting more work into getting graphics to compliment my posts and generally having a whale of a time blogging. By the way AdSense is surpassing previous levels (before you ask).
I can’t get to sleep at night because I’m excited about how things are progressing and full of ideas to try the next day.
Sorry to be so sickly optimistic about it, but I’ve found since avoiding my RSS reader and switching to Live Writer, my output has quadrupled. Probably the two best things for increasing my motivation were restricting my RSS reading and Live Writer keeps me away from my blog admin panel where stats and other distractions lurk…
