What Do You Think Of Twitter?

Twitter is a relatively new online social phenom whereby you can update your goings on by the minute or even seconds. Some people call it microblogging, and some love it, some don’t. As I mentioned the other day, Nick Wilson decided to unsubscribe from 100 blogs in favor of following a select few Twitter feeds. He’s also using his Twitter microblog to promote ScribeFire, the new incarnation of the PFF (Performancing for Firefox) editor.

Has anyone got any comments re Twitter? Kathy Sierra at Headrush/ Creating Passionate Users asks is Twitter too good? To me, it seems highly counterproductive to regular blogging. I certainly wouldn’t want to follow a constant stream of updates from multiple parties – especially when some of it seems of the old diary blog style. On the other hand, someone has created Twitter Fiction, a site that posts snippets of fiction, 140 characters or less at a time. And you can participate.

I’m being diplomatic here (for once) regarding Twitter in general. So, yeah or nay for Twitter? What do you think? Is it something you’d use? Or are you staying far away?

  1. Well i guess i fit in the “some don’t” category… like you said Raj, i find it counterproductive too! I spent about an hour writing useless 140 characters posts that no one read (wait 1 person read some of them and added me as a friend… yay!!), since they stay on the “public timeline” for what.. 20-30 seconds? Before they get burried… i just don’t get it!

  2. I’m still not sold on Twitter, however, I found the Twitter feed for punk rock/ punk poet legend Henry Rollins. If it is in fact him (it appears to be), for me it’s kind of cool to follow his thoughts.

  3. Twitter is for Jason Calcanis junkies. If you want to hear every thought in his head, register and become his friend. Otherwise, stick to Facebook, Virb, and AIM.

  4. @Garri: Interesting idea. I plan to move back to Toronto, and this might be more appropriate, for finding an apartment, than having an intrusive “sticky” post. [Assuming of course that an appropriate person will see my Twitter box.]

  5. …and can see an application for its use on my blog. I would use it to tell people what I’m looking for. Right now I’m looking for an interesting apartment to rent in Barcelona on a holiday/vacation basis. I could ‘tweet’that on Twitter and also serve it on my blog.

  6. I’m completely missing the point of twitter.

To be honest, I find it a bit annoying.
