Sitepoint Marketplace becomes Flippa

Most of you have probably heard of Sitepoint, either from its books, tutorials, or their well established marketplace, but over the last few years, they have been finding the marketplace becoming a community of its own. At first, they split off the design work to a new site, 99designs.com and now it seems the buying and selling of websites will be moved to a new domain called Flippa.

Currently in Beta, Flippa looks like a whole break with the current Marketplace, where 99designs looked fairly similar in nature to the older design market. The good thing is that they’ve moved over the user accounts so anyone that has or had an account on the old Marketplace, can use Flippa.

Why change the Marketplace on Sitepoint? Details are already on Flippa:

Why Flippa.com? If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!

In a nut shell, the SitePoint Marketplace has outgrown its tab on sitepoint.com. For this marketplace to remain the #1 location for buying and selling web sites, and for us to properly service the needs of our buyer and seller community, it simply had to have its own identity – it had to be set free from sitepoint.com. Once you’ve had a chance to look around the site we’re confident that you’ll agree it was the right move.

So far, there doesn’t seem to be much real content on the new site, as people test out the new site. How will we be able to tell the real sales from the fake as they run this Beta? Not really sure, but one thing is for certain, Flippa is something we will all have to get used to, and hopefully it won’t kill the community that has grown on Sitepoint.

  1. This is what Mark Harbottle: Co-Founder of Sitepoint has this to say to his paying customers who voiced their thoughts on the new Flippa:

Thanks for all your positive feedback guys. We appreciate it. One thing to keep in mind…
Our buyers aren’t going anywhere. They are savvy business people. They don’t care about the design of the site or the fact the logo sucks (the current logo is a placeholder BTW), they simply get on with the business of buying, and we’ve made it a lot easier for them to do that on flippa.com.

Meanwhile while you all whine and complain about the fees, the design, etc. the smart sellers are listing their sites on flippa.com and they are attracting the majority of the buyer interest. They will also get the added benefit of the PR we’re about to roll out.

So, it’s totally up to you! If you want to come across to flippa and sell your site in the professional marketplace we’re creating for serious buyers, we welcome you with open arms. If not, please do go to digitalpoint. List your site for free and see if the old adage of “you get what you pay for” applies.

  3. Sitepoints’ new site called Flippa seems to have created a wave of mixed emotions from buyers and sellers.

As a buyer and seller on Sitepoints’ marketplace, I’m very discouraged at their atempt to change thier marketplace. Flippa seems to have been changed for the worse in a lot of cases. Other users are complaing also with the increased costs of selling. They have more then doubled the prices for a seller to list and now charging a fee for each successful auction won.

Sitepoint had a good thing with their old marketplace and now they are throwing it away. This is all due to greed. They should learn Quality over Quantity.

With other sites selling the same type of products for a cheaper price in todays economy people will go where its cheaper most likely.

  4. I too think sitepoint has outgrown its usability. I find it real difficult keeping tabs on latest developments in the sitepoint marketplace for buy/sale of websites. Previously, I could easily run a search and find sites which I can buy and develop easily for later sales. but with increase of divisions, it has become difficult.

I hope flippa solves this problem.
