Over in the Performancing blog forums there's the beginnings of a great discussion on the fate, and viability of Chitika for bloggers. Gary poses the question, and members are weighing in with their thoughts. So far, the news aint good...

Adsense: Which Blogs Rock, Which Stink?

Submitted by Andy Hagans on December 15, 2005 - 3:13pm in

Scrivs recently asserted that Adsense is a beginner’s first option, but a professional’s last. I found his analysis to be overly simplistic (he later admitted that there are exceptions to this).

The question I’m interested in, is when is Adsense likely to be a site’s primary monetization vehicle? And when is the right time to “go direct” with your ad sales?

What does Behavioural Targeting Mean for Blogs?

Submitted by Chris Garrett on December 5, 2005 - 9:20am in

Advertisers and publishers are always looking for ways to improve targeting accuracy. You know yourself when your ads closely match your audience your click through rate goes up, you are happy because you are getting lots of lovely cheques and your advertisers are happy because they get results. You might have read that Yahoo! are testing behavioural targeting, this has got to mean Google are too - could this be just the news we needed to hear?

Black Thursday for Chitika eMiniMalls Publishers

Submitted by Andy Hagans on December 1, 2005 - 4:21pm in

Chitika eMinimalls has been a bit of a darling with profiteering bloggers since its launch. A few recent developments however suggest that the honeymoon may be over.

Know Thy AdSense Terms And Conditions

Submitted by Peter Brady on November 25, 2005 - 3:03pm in

Getting your AdSense account suspended is not the end of the world but it’s obviously something to avoid if you can. So it was while I reviewed the AdSense Terms and Conditions of Use that I thought it might be worth highlighting some key areas to watch out for. Under no circumstances should this replace your reading the small print thoroughly yourself, which you can do at Google, but this summary may serve as a timely reminder of your key responsibilities:

 Amazon Beta Chitika Killer

Submitted by Nick Wilson on November 19, 2005 - 12:41am in

Amazon have begun a beta program with it's affiliates to test a system that will surely rival Chitika, but also IntelliTXT. No, im not kidding -- popup JS windows that activate onhover on links linking to Amazon products. They show the usual suspects: Title, price, buy now, and could well be, if adopted and rolled out en masse, a killer way to monetize certain types of blogs.

Elevenses: Adsense, Blog Readers, YPN & Scarcity

Submitted by Nick Wilson on November 17, 2005 - 7:13am in

One of the things I didn't want to do with Performancing was blog every single piece of information that might possibly be of interest, but generally write and encourage you to write more original, useful posts. But we all like to have something good to read with our morning coffee right? So, please welcome the start of a new, occasional series called Elevenses, where i'll post a few notable stories for your mid-morning reading. Enjoy...

 Chitika CTR Set to Plummet

Submitted by Nick Wilson on November 16, 2005 - 6:06am in

Chitika have announced that they are to address the issue of "curiosity clicks" by de-linking some of the text in their ad units. The result? Most likely a dramatic decrease in CTR and revenue for publishers.

 Yahoo! RSS Ads Launch Today

Submitted by Nick Wilson on November 15, 2005 - 11:08pm in

Yahoo! will be (or possibly have) launching Search ads for RSS today. It's available to all YPN beta users and will presumably work much the same way Adsense for RSS does (paul blogged about Adsense for RSS earlier today). Unfortunately, due the fact that I live in Denmark, I can't get on the damn beta, so if anyone out there want's to fill in a few gaps for Performancing, please do!

 Putting AdSense in Your Feed

Submitted by Paul Stamatiou on November 15, 2005 - 3:19am in

Most professional bloggers use the excellent combination of Google AdSense for revenue and FeedBurner's feed publishing service for syndication and promotion. However, I have seen that not too many bloggers are aware of Google Adsense sister-program, AdSense for feeds. Essentially AdSense for feeds ties into your AdSense account and allows you to display advertisements of your choosing within your feed given Google's AdSense for Feeds code.

 Ad Program Tips - Formatting

Submitted by Peter Brady on November 11, 2005 - 6:12pm in

Having thought about doing a single post on ad placement and design I thought it might be better to split this up into a series. It will be a sort of work in progress if you like. Each tip will be strictly given on a "this is what works for some people but may not work for you basis - with a strong emphasis on personal experimentation."

 YPN Falling Short of Adsense

Submitted by Andy Hagans on November 11, 2005 - 3:05pm in

Many--if not most--bloggers receive most of their advertising revenue from Google Adsense. The reason is simple: despite the program's annoying tendencies towards secrecy (Smart Pricing), Adsense pays out far better than alternatives (usually). But there was one slight problem--we were all dependant on one entity for monetization. Umm, *eek!*

Which is why so many of us jumped for joy when Yahoo! finally announced YPN, their Adsense alternative. The program has been in BETA for a while, and I've tested it out on my own blogs. I've got to say, YPN is nowhere near to rivalling Adsense, and I'll tell you why in one word:
