Yes, I know most of you thought: "Well , BOTH are really important". I know but you see, on a daily basis, I have a certain amount of time to invest in optimizing my website.

The problem I have discovered with backlinks is that it takes a lot of TIME to send personalized e-mails to the webmasters and ask them if they could add my site in their links etc... Obviously, theses are websites that 90% of time are kind of competitors of my website according to their own content.

That makes it difficult for me to say : Look, I'm down the scale, I need your top ranked website to rank myself up and who knows, maybe beat you in ranking in the future..."

So usually, theses webmasters are use to receive backlinks "offers" and they do not really need me. But in terms of time consuming, when you do it properly, it takes a lot of time.

My other time investing target would be to opt for the very good original content adding to my website. This too, when done honestly in the proper way takes time to invest but at least, it adds instant values to your little "kingdom" instead of begging for backlinks.

So , I would really appreciate your help on this matter and also, your own experiences because I'm sure I'm not alone asking myself this question.

Thanks in advance for your answers!
Sincerely,
Miky

Focus on content,

Focus on content, participate on other sites, become friends with people in power...

I'd focus on building relationships with people who will be able to help you build out your network. But you've got to realize that in order to get something, you have to offer something. It's almost a catch 22 but not quite.

So two rules: focus on content and build relationships. You'll find that having a good site makes it easier to network...so start with content!

Thanks Ryan. What about you

Thanks Ryan. What about you on a daily basis? Do you work in a specific optimizing schedule or you simply go with the flow... working here and there ?

Put them both together :)

Write a high quality content piece, then email it to relevant webmasters and bloggers. To have a higher success rate, make sure your participate in their communities (post blog comments, link to them, etc.).

Do both - write a bunch of

Do both - write a bunch of good articles and delay-publish them on your blog. Then, spend the extra time building links. Then back to content.

It's a cycle - if you get stuck in one area and ignore the other you'll hurt your blog.
