I've currently got a newsletter running through my host, but the sign-up mechanism is quite clunky and i generally don't want to be tied to a particular host's system, so I'm thinking about moving my newsletter to self-managed, from a program on my own machine. I know there are some web-based services that handle newsletters, but was wondering if anyone had any recommendations of software for newsletter applications? I basically just need something that will intelligently handle HTML e-mails to a few thousand people, with customisation like their name, etc.

Thanks!

A few thousand would be

A few thousand would be handled by word/outlook using mail merge. I would suggest though once it gets really popular you are better off with a hosted service.

I too would recommend a hosted service.

It will be easier for you long term. There is less likelihood of your messages being blocked or universally quarantined. I've read that the list managers stay in contact with ISPs such as AOL to make sure they aren't blacklisted or blocked.

Plus there are added advantages such as tracking how many people open the message, click your links and who subscribes when etc.

Hosted service

Does anyone have a recommendation or experience with a hosted service? Ideally a url/direction would be great.

Thanks Chris and Andy,

The suggestion is appreciated. I will check them out. If you have any others, I am sure everyone will appreciate it as well.
