Content is my number one, the more content the better. The better the content the better.
That said, video is very sticky. Someone might bail out on one of my overly long diatribes, but if I have a video there they can get a break or pick up information passively.

Ryan,
I'd add news aggregators to that list - there are certain niches where news aggregators are quite big and are literally the way of life for most blogs.

You could network a little bit with old line reporter types and try and plant yourself in the middle of a story to get featured, or you could post a couple jobs on performancing. ;)

Social voting creates key points in my blog. If my blog was a map the social voting would be the major cities on the map. Constant content would be the towns, villages and roadways that make it a coherent entity. But the other one is tough. Because I have not figured in what niche I belong. VB is not a photoblog although photos are a main attraction. And it's not a personal blog because I lead a dull life and wouldn't dream about inflicting it on my readers. So this is a problem. If anyone has an idea about it please let me know.
signatures. find good topics
signatures. find good topics to blog on and try to put citations, references and hyperlinks :)
All those things plus video

I have been having some luck
I have been having some luck trolling the gaming forums on more mainstream sites and dropping links back to reviews/news on my own site.
Ryan, I'd add news
