I'm curious because one of my problems with promoting things seems to involve not having a good sense of the scale at which people do or should do things.
In this thread: http://performancing.com/node/2446 , Easton says he 'leave an average of fifteen or twenty comments a day on different blogs'.
In general I've been bad about not participating more in online communities, but then I thought I was doing good by leaving 1-2 comments a day at various blogs. Until I saw the post above! 15-20 a day!
I guess I need to do better! How many blogs do you comment at on a daily basis? How much time do you spend each day doing it? With a new blog how helpful is this in getting the word out?

I vary, some days I don't have time to catch up with other blogs at all, other days I will comment on about four or five. Most times I only comment when what I have to say doesn't expand on the topic, if I think I have something interesting to say of reasonable length I would usually write a post linking to the original. It's definitely a good habit to get into, it gets your name known in your niche and if you only get one new reader from each it soon adds up.
One site...
... and about 6 posts on it every day. It brings in some of my best audience because they are close to the subject.
Chris hits it ...
If I find time to read other blogs I'll try to comment on the articles to give the author and his readership some feedback. The numbers differ from day to day. Without counting my comments on p.com I would say that I leave between three and ten comments on other pages.

I use myspace, livejournal, and now Performancing. I never would have started blogging if it was for the
Mozilla Add-on, Performancing. I'm sure you all know about that though. They need to make Performancing Myspace.com compatible! I don't like having to sign in to post a blog. (Most of my friends use myspace.) I also use Gaiaonline.com but that isn't really a blog.
15-20 comments a day!?
I don't ever comment, I ... uh, wait, I'm commenting now. Make that 1 in a long while.
If I make a comment, it's usually to report a bug (if I can't find proper bug reporting channel).
Back to findind way to report performancing extension bug.... if I can find proper channel.
15-20 comments a day, however, seems a bit excessive. How does the guy have time to make his own content... If one comment takes 5 minutes, he spends more than an hour of his day commenting on other people's stuff. I wonder why... maybe they're friends, who knows.
Maybe he's just leaving trackbacks for links to his content.... people don't just do stuff for no reason, what is his reinforcer? more traffic at his site? or comments about his comments??
Ok, now back to finging way to report performancing for firefox bug... :P
ps: Pleeeze put textile, or some kinda markup for ur comment system ... html tags are so Y2K.
Hmmm - so everyone's
Hmmm - so everyone's different.
If I only wrote on my own blog, there would be no one reading it. I need to be posting elsewhere so people know I exist.
I'm finding it is, or can be anyway, difficult to balance spending time writing on your own blog and getting the word out about it. I'll have to work out some sort of compromise.
Thanks for all your comments!
my 2 cents
If you're looking to promote your blog...
Pick out the top 5 blogs in your niche, and read them daily. Contribute, as Chris has said, intelligently. Quality matters here, but don't skimp on quantity either.
One thing you should remember is that if the discussion gets long, you can always post your reply on your own blog and then invite the other blogger to comment by leaving a note in their comments section.
Controversial commenting is fun, but I wouldnt recommend it to everyone. Someone I know has gotten kicked off forums for stuff like that :)
