How often are stats updated?

Performancing Metrics API

I am trying to write a simple application that will use the metrics API and return the stats. I am wondering how often should I 'refresh' the stats. I know that the web version updtes the states hourly; but what about through the API?

So just to reiterate; the stats are updated 'about 5-10min' after the hour.. on the hour? In that way; my application has no need to 'refresh' every 20 minutes or anything..
