When do you start monetizing?

I have couple of blogs that are in more-or-less starting mode. While I am trying to attract the first reader, I try to be as un-annoying as possible - therefore there is neither AdSense, nor any other kind of advertisement there. I hope, it makes a point.

However, it is tempting to add the AdSense blocks :)
I wonder what is your experience with starting the AdSense runs? How many posts, comments, visitors/pageviews, feed readers per day do you usually have when AdSense brings, say $50-100 a month.

In the past with my sites I

In the past with my sites I havent reached $100 a month in adsense until it has reached the 500-1000 page views a day mark (depends on your CTR). Personally I put in at least the space for ads really early on and I think people are more annoyed by the introduction of ads rather than ads being there before they first start visiting.

ads from the beginning

I thought about this too. I just started a blog, and decided to put a few ads on there from the beginning for the reason Chris mentions: I think people get annoyed when you introduce ads later on. I hope ads are so normal these days that they do not turn people away and I assume that people who really hate ads have an ad blocker.

I did choose to use full feeds for now, so that people who dislike the ads but like my content can read everything in their rss reader.

Yep, from the beginning

I had a similair experience with readers getting annoyed because they notice how you put the ads on your blog. I started my blog as a quick idea but had the ads on it before it really started atracting visitors. Nobody ever complained. Then I got fed up with the design and put a new design on the live site (yeah, I know...)

Some visitors noticed that, and started complimenting me about the new design. The ads where not in there yet. I put them on, and got complaints about the ads from those very same readers within 24 hours.

Bottom line: put the ads on the blog when you start, or at least put placeholders for those ads on the blog. Then only make one change at a time. There is more to blending ads into your site than just using the right colors...

Always from the start

I am just starting out in the blogging world so I can't draw on experience from the blogger side but as a person that reads blogs it puts be right off if ads start popping up after the site has been around for awhile.

going on 4 months

Hi,

My political blog is a group blog and we started up in Sept. 2006. We have sustaned steady traffic. About 3k uniques/mo and about 10k pageviews a month. We have been posting about 7-10 actual articles on the blog every month, but are going to be increasing to about 15/mo by end of Jan '07.
We want to start earning some money if possible. Where do you think we need to be to start making $100+/mo and what ways can we get to that point? Is the traffic we are getting above or below normal for a 4 month old blog?

thanks for you help.
