Experienced fiction editor wanted to provide high-level written feedback to author on a climate change novel manuscript approximately 170 pages in length. Seeking a fiction editor to read entire novel manuscript and provide manuscript critique in writing to author in a report approximately 10 - 20 pages in length. Your report should include an overall assessment of critical elements of the manuscript including plot, characterization, story line, story consistency, structure, tone, style, dialogue, narrative, setting, and pace. The report should be candid and honest and highlight strengths and weaknesses of the manuscript. The report should include specific ideas and specific actionable advice on the above elements of the story and other elements of the story you believe important. Your report should outline specific steps for how to improve the manuscript. No mark-up, copy-editing or line-by-line editing of the text is required. The manuscript will not have been proofread for grammar, punctuation, spelling, fact-checking, etc., but your report does not need to address or correct these.

Interested candidates should email their reply together with:

1. Detailed resume including fiction editing experience and include specific experience in providing manuscript critiques. You must provide names of titles and authors of published fiction works edited. If you do not provide documentation including titles and authors, your interest will not considered. If you do not have experience editing published works of fiction or can not document your experience please do not apply.

2. A description of your familiarity with climate change literature, especially books and summaries written since 2005. IPCC reports are considered too conservative and newspaper accounts too general. Experience with peer reviewed articles considered a plus but not necessary. Provide a summary of books you have read that you consider appropriate reading for this job.

3. A description of your familiarity with levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere throughout the Earth's history and projected into the future.

4. A description of your knowledge regarding recent world events relative to climate change.

5. Names of titles and authors of any other published fiction editing assignments completed other than manuscript critiques, for example developmental editing and copy editing, to document further your complete editing experience.

Candidates with editing experience, even substantial, only in fields other than fiction will not be considered and are encouraged not to apply.

Candidates in the San Francisco Bay Area will be available to meet the author personally in San Francisco or nearby area for an interview prior to engagement. References are not necessary at this time, though of course they are helpful. However, candidates who are considered after review of credentials will be required to provide references prior to engagement. At that time, references will be checked carefully.

Provide proposed rates: Compensation to be mutually agreed. Turnaround time for the project is about 4-8 weeks, to be mutually agreed.
