Hanging in There

Today started bad and only got worse. It’s days like these that make me want to escape to a log cabin in the mountains somewhere far away. Ever feel like that?

It started with me feeling nauseous and only got worse with me making someone angry, which then made me feel physically sick.

This isn’t the first bad day on record, nor will it be the last. Quite a few of you will have much more valid bad-day reasons than my small troubles. But the woe we feel is real to us, even when trivial to others.

So it’s not new, we all get those days, and if we are going to get anywhere we have to keep plugging away.

What keeps us going?

A big boost came from my twitter followers sympathy and cheer-ups. They didn’t judge me, they didn’t tell me how they had it worse (while I expect many do), they just sent me some good vibes. That makes me smile.

The lesson there is be nice when you are riding high and things are going well now because some day you might want some nice back.

Next booster is knowing what I am in this for. My daughter came home from school. She lit up the room. Kind of puts things in perspective. It often helps to look at the big picture, think of what will be important to you next year or ten years from now.

How do you deal with the off days when everything you touch turns to poo?

  1. Some days I can be working the phone for all it’s worth, but nothing happens. People hang up on me or tell me to get lost. It’s tough being a headhunter.

I work from home so when that happens I turn off the computer, go to the living room, lie on the couch, turn on the TV and sometimes even drift off. I usually don’t try to fight the feeling of frustration. Tomorrow will be a better day.

That’s also the time I turn to my favourite hobby – photography. I can get lost in another world of images and imagination.

    It works for me.

  2. When I start having a day like the one you describe I first try to limit my activities to simple things I can accomplish easily. That keeps the potential frustration count down.
And if I have time I go to Picasa2 and look at all the unedited photos I have there. There are thousands of photos waiting for some attention.
I will edit a few and then post them. I find that to be very relaxing and enjoyable.

Also it is not an activity that I can screw up. On a bad day it seems like the stars are against me and everything I do turns out badly.
Mostly it’s just being aware that it IS one of those days and being careful where I step.

  3. I never got the hang of video but I love photography, I think part of the relaxation is it puts your focus (sorry) on external beauty rather than internal turmoil

  4. Ahhh, I knew it couldn’t be you getting angry. I’m just too dumb to read correctly what you actually said

Yeah, if I can afford to buy either a Nikon or Olympus DSLR camera in the next few months, I’ll work in regular photography, but I’m focusing mostly on video, with possible shooting to start in summer for a horror comedy movie I’m working on. There’s something about photography that always lifted my spirits.

  5. @Erika – I should learn to do that, it’s good advice. I work from home too but I never really take advantage of it

@Raj – It wasn’t me that was angry, I inadvertently made someone else angry. Nice visual though, big bearded winnie the pooh? LOL True about the photography, maybe I should start another photo a day project? So you have started snapping again? Good for you!

  6. What?!@! Chris Garrett angry? Goodness! Imagine a big, bearded version of Winnie the Pooh. Then imagine him getting mad. Oh double bother!

But seriously, grab your camera and go snap pics, like Erika suggested. I went out to the Fergus Market on the weekend. There’s an old bridge that spans widthwise over the river. I did some video taping of the rushing waters and the old stone ruins still sitting on one cliffside. The 10 minutes I spent taping and snapping was enough to relieve the stress of the past 3+ months. Then yesterday I screen-tested a young host for a new web video show I’m working on.

Photography/ videography does wonders for relieving stress. But I think you already know that Maybe it’s time for you to start posting more regularly on your DSLRblog.
