Will Google Ding Performancing For The Top 20 Sidebar Links?

Here's a question for you:

Should Performancing have to worry about the consequences of putting 20 outbound links to its top 20 pMetrics blogs in the sidebar?

Google has been known to ding sites for link-lists in the sidebar and footer. Now we all know that blogrolls and whatnot are natural web behavior that should not be penalized. But as we know, Google and the Link Nazi are cracking down on paid links. Will their algo be able to handle something as benign and community oriented as a list of top 20 sites that use our stats program?

Another way of putting this: you know somethings messed up when you're worrying about something as stupid, trivial and foolish as this question.

So what's messed up?

nah

Ryan, I don't think it'll be an issue :) Nick Wilson had a list up as well, and as you can see, Perf has a strong PR 7. I think that in this case it's all relevant. Ie., it doesn't seem to affect Technorati.

Yes, something is. Too much of focus on PR. Especially with 6810 backlinks (many of them being high ranked sites) in Google. ;-)

And also with all the drops in PR we've seen over the weekend, one can expect that the value of a PR will become higher again. Turn the clock 3-4 years back. When a PR5 still meant hard work. Lately it had become too easy to get even a PR6. I have seen many sites with a totally undeserved 6 (heck, I even had one of those). The PR algo was quite screwed IMHO over last 12 months (SERP have gotten cleaner tho).
Although I do know that many have cried last 2 days, I am glad to notice that things have become harder again.

At least it hasn't

At least it hasn't completely wiped out too many of our sites! On the positive side, if the PR shakedown means splogs and other half-assed sites are devalued, then that can only be a good thing.

I don't think your linklist at the side will cause any sort of problem. In fact, can I suggest that you implement something similar for the top contributors to the community over time? You could link to the URLs given in the member profile, or to the profile page itself. A lot of WordPress users are starting to use this (plugin) as a way to thank commenters on the blog and provide a nofollowed link back.

actually

Actually, it's just a matter of displaying the member points list. It does mean, however, a crackdown on irrelevant blog entries, else it's easy to write a paragraph of nonsense (i don't mean spam) and get a few points.

Yeah, I see what you mean.

Yeah, I see what you mean. Drupal's a funny old CMS - how much customization does it require for a site like this?

a lot

A lot, I believe :) I've got partial admin privileges but I don't modify any modules. There are numerous modules running that are not turned on in vanilla Drupal mode.
