So that hive management (ryan, you) can coordinate events (social media bootcamp, other stuff we come up with) better. Plus there's a lot more that Hive can accomplish if the members can be mobilised.

Although - imo, the mailing list should only be used for Hive related stuff and NOT social media promotion - we already have enough of that

So an announcement list? We can do that through the amember control panel and also through vbulletin providing people haven't blocked it in their profiles

Vbulletin has built in mail options where you can send out mail to groups, individuals or what have you. I don't see the need to use an outside application for a mailing list when the email can be managed and sent out through the VBulletin back end. But as Chris said, if the user has opted to not receive email from administrators, they may not receive the email.

I think that the admin can override email settings. However, that's the member's loss, if they turn off emails from admin. I know I want bootcamp heads-up emails. I missed the last one.

We have a mailing list for social promotion and social media discussion. PM me if you want to be on it.

But an announcement list would be good.

I don't mind receiving announcements since I haven't been able to come every day lately.
