You can always set it up locally on your computer using XAMPP (I've got a post on that on techwhimsy.com ) or internal to your network and, with multiple authors, use it as a collaborative work system with update posts, static pages for content in progress, tracking achievements and milestones etc

Admittedly you could do that with just about anything you like, but that applies to many things. The fact that WP is largely just a combination of PHP and MySQL means that there is less futzing about and it should be easy to use for most people. With the right plug-ins you could probably turn WP into a totally kicking intranet

Shane: Good advice. I had down "article assignment system" but have in fact used WP the way you're describing it, with a passworded installation. Hired bloggers would post, then I would then take the finished posts and move them "live" to the right website.

Intranet for sure. Just use a networked server, or have the DNS resolve internally.

    I've seen WP used for:

    1. directories
    2. music archives
    3. sales pages (you know, the kind that go on, and on, and on)
    4. fark like user submitted links (glamorati.com in progress)
    5. newspapers
    6. journals
