Thread: Why is there so much unused screen real-estate with cutline?

Default Why is there so much unused screen real-estate with cutline?

I'm a complete newbie but I'm seeing so much wasted screen to both sides of my page (and this one) and I wonder why that is. Now granted I have a wide screen monitor but still, I would expect to use more. To speak clearly I have a 19" wide screen. The screen is 16" wide and this theme uses up only 10.75" or 67% of the width. All the rest is white.

Can I use one side of this blank space to add advertisements while leaving the sidebar untouched?

    I'm using the latest Cutline-1-1.4-2ColumnRight.

Not all screens are as wide as yours, so there has to be a maximum width to a website layout, or let it be completely fluid. The latter is a bit too flexible sometimes that's why most web designers opt for a fixed width layout, which is either around <800px or <960-1024px. Anything wider than that is too wide for most monitors.

If you want to use that space for your advertisements, go ahead, but there's no guarantee everyone will be able to see it, or they'll have to scroll to see it, which is quite annoying. The sidebar area is usually where the ads are. If you want a wider layout, try the three-column theme and use one or both of the sidebars for the ads.

Lastly, not everybody is dead set on making money off blogs.

Thanks for enlightening this newbie. I suspected that might be the answer, but I wanted to make sure. So is the 3 column version wider or does the extra column get all it's width by taking away from the content area?

The width of the content area on the left is still the same, and it's wider because there are two sidebars.
