    Default Article/Post suggestion

I've taken a quick look around and haven't been able to turn up results on a search for something that compares blogger pay to "writer" pay. By writer I mean magazine/newspaper type writers.

Deb if you have something like this - can you provide me the link? I'd love to reference it.

    Hi Gayla,

We don't have anything comparing writers pay to bloggers pay (though you have given me an idea!) but we did feature a couple of posts at FWJ and NBT discussing pay rates for bloggers.

Let me know if these help:

I think we have more. Let me know and I'll scare them up for you.

Here's an easy answer: yes, the typical blogging gig pays a LOT less than traditional freelance writing work. Else I wouldn't be struggling the past three calendar years of working 7 days a week nearly all the time - and I was already a published writer and author. Even though I had some months back in 2006 where I was getting orders totalling $6-8K/month, each individual article paid so little and required so much work that I was often making the equivalent $1-3/hr. (I'm Canadian.) It's better now but not by much, even with a far more productive workflow.

On the other hand, I'm starting to inch into territory where I'm getting per word rates that are closer to low-end print rates. The trick is to get into freelance "writing", not just blogging, if you want to survive. Unless you work for some big tech blog, in which case you're probably getting a reasonable salary.

Not sure if this will help, but this is a list of monies received by freelance journalists here in the UK - pay rates submitted anonymously for a range of different kinds of writing (national newspaper, local, magazine etc):

And I found this (average blogger rates):

I am good friends with journalist of the year last year here in the UK, will see what info I can gleam from them as they are involved in both fields.

Thanks for all the input. I've started digging back into my work at home roots on MomGadget to help out with so many locals asking me for help in finding work online and I just want them to have more realistic expectations. I've worked online for nearly 10 years to get to the level of pay I get per post/article - so it's not something that can be compared really.

Appreciate all you can send my way. I'm happy to link back

    Cheers
