It's a hashtag. So when there's an event or discussion you can access the hashtags to find out who else is talking about said event or discussion - even if you don't follow. Give it a Google.

I see. So instead of following a ton of people that are attending the event, I subscribe to a hash tag or do I simply monitor the hash tag via the site Chris has posted?

If you are organising an event or have a group of friends there is also this service where you add everyone then can see all the most recent status messages on one page
