stack overflow error message

That nasty message is now appearing on the widgets page.

Had added the latest WP - all sorts of problems, put back all my old files.
However, the 'categories' no longer appear in the sidebar.
I'm using widgets.
When I attempt to see what is going on, the widgets page starts to load normally, then the widgets jump and then I get the stack overflow error. Appears on both IE6 and FF (PC platform).

Any suggestions much appreciated.
