Online news borrows from both, but because it is a medium where users are active readers, scannability is key to effective online journalism. There are a number of techniques that enhance the scannability of any webpage:

I'd read about the scannability factor, but to see all the do's and don'ts so clearly laid out is really useful.

Yep, I forgot to give Paul Bradshaw the right credits by naming him. But I follow his blog now for a couple of month via the Facebook mini-feed and he really tries hard to hand out valuable information in his longer articles.

As he is coming from classic British journalism his articles show another perspective on the blogging thingy.
