The Implications Of Your Template Colours

Submitted by Peter Brady on November 17, 2005 - 10:57am in

As I mentioned in a previous post about template design, colour scheme considerations are at the forefront of my mind at the moment. Probably too much at the forefront! But, just delving a little deeper into this topic I found some fascinating insights about how the psychology of colour can possibly imply certain things about your blog. Now, I don’t profess to be a protagonist of psychology, in fact I err on the side of being cynical in most instances, but there does seem to be something about the connotations of certain template colours that rings true with me. I have summarised some of the principal implications below:

White
• Implies sterility.
• Implies innocence.
• Popular decorating colour.
• Neutral.
• Universally matches other colours.

Black
• Implies power.
• Implies authority.
• Associations with evil.

Red
• Implies emotion.
• Scientific studies have shown that red can increase breathing and heart rate.
• Can imply confrontation because of it’s prominence amongst other colours.
• Nothing to do with blogs but interesting nonetheless is the fact that red can apparently make your car more attractive to thieves!

Blue
• Probably one of the most popular colours.
• Believed to have a calming influence.
• Associated with tranquility.
• Associated with the cold.
• Some evidence to suggest that blue can raise awareness and productivity levels.
• However, can also be associated with poisonous properties particularly within the context of food and nature.

Green
• Associated with natural origins.
• Implies freshness and tranquility.
• Can encourage relaxation.

Yellow
• Grabs the eyes attention.
• Associated with positive thoughts and actions.
• Can be too much for the eye to take in if used to excess.

Purple
• Implies feminity.
• Associations with aristocracy and grandeur.
• Can appear fake because of it’s scarcity in the natural environment.

Brown
• Implies solidity.
• Earthiness.
