Wordpress Guru Needed

Submitted by tanyat on September 7, 2007 - 6:10pm in

Well, you don't need to be a guru but I am migrating from MT to Wordpress - 1 click install on Dreamhost - great. Now I need the URLs to match up and the old movable type ones to redirect to WP. I just can't wrap my head around how to do this.

Email me (tptphd@gmail.com) with a quote - and ... I would also like to upgrade the design to be more eye catching - doesn't have to be totally new or can be - email me for more details.

you'll need to rig something

I have been trying to move 6 blogs from Typepad to WordPress, and have not produced a complete non-manual solution yet. You pretty much have to do some manual work.

It amounts to much the same as Movable Type (same company). Because MT uses .html, and truncates each article's title, as well as uses unusual titles, you can't apply some nice simple formula for redirecting the old MT URLs. What you probably have to do is generate a list of all the old URLs, then write a manual redirect for each in the .htaccess file for your server.

That's how I have to do it, but with over 400 pages, I've been putting this job off for 8 months. Don't do that. How many pages do you have to move? If it's a small number, i can probably help you on some upcoming weekend. But you will need a full list of all the old URLs. I know Typepad does not generate this for you, unless i missed it. I haven't tried in MT.

thanks

Hey thanks for the info. I have 500 entries so I guess I'm going to just try and figure out the issue with the comments before making a drastic move to WP. Sheesh, blogging can be hell!

yeah

Yeah, moving platforms can be a major pain in the ass.

MT shoud be able to export the comments, and if you're using a new version of WP, they'll be imported properly.

Do check the MT export feature section in your MT panel and see if you can export a list of all old URLs. Or have you already moved from there? If you can't generate a list, then it's going to be a manual job. Preferably, you want a list where each entry shows the article title and the old URL. If you can produce this, the job will be easier, and I think I can help you with this, at least partly.
