Snarky Green Blog Looking for Bloggers Now to Transition into Full Time Writers by Summer

Submitted by SheaGunther on April 4, 2008 - 4:52pm in

I am looking for a few great writers to blog for me on a part time per-post basis for a few months before transitioning into full time employees. I run http://earthfirst.com/, a new snarky smart green blog. We went live in February and have been doing a very slow public beta roll out. We're a Chicago based startup with angel funding going after bigger money to fund our blogging and video production work.

I'm a few months away from being able to bring on a few full time bloggers and I want to get started evaluating people now. If you have a passion for creating great content and the chops to write about green issues with a sharp, sarcastic, and fun voice and you would like to move into a full time spot sometime before early summer please email me at shea@earthfirst.com

We need someone who knows how to:

- Use Wordpress
- Create great headlines
- Write tags and SEO in a Box descriptions
- Use Photoshop or some other photo editor to manipulate and prepare photos for posting
- Hit deadlines and be rock solid dependable.

The compensation right now is $10-100/post, depending on length and complexity, and traffic bonuses. The full time spots I will be filling before Summer will have a base rate of $2,000- $2,500/month with performance based bonuses pay on top.

To apply, please send the following to me at shea@earthfirst.com.

- 100 words or less on who you are and why you want to write for me.

- 50 words on less on why you want to be a full time blogger

- 25 words or less on what you don't like about our site (http://earthfirst.com)

- two 200 words or less posts that you'd write for EarthFirst. Take a look at what we've written about before and write two posts that you'd be excited about publishing to the site. We won't be using any of these posts on the site unless we hire you, they are just used to see if you can hit our desired style and voice. Pay close attention to formating and make your posts match. Please include links to photos that you would use, making sure to use art that gives us rights. Creative Commons is good for this, but you probably already know that if you're the kind of person we want to hire.

Thanks!

Update- How to Successfully Apply to This Posting:
- Send me exactly what I ask for, 100 words on who you are and why you want to blog for me, 50 words on why you want to be a full time blogger, 25 words on what you don't like about our site, and two posts that are 200 words or less that you'd post to EF if you were a writer. I get a lot of applications and I get annoyed by people who can't follow directions (pet peeve, what can I say), so if you skip out on sending me exactly what I ask you're more than likely to jump right to the Ignore Pile.

5 Sample Posts..........Is That Really Necessary?

Shea: I love that you included a post on feedback about your blog.

"25 words or less on what you don't like about our site (http://earthfirst.com)"

But i do feel that requesting 5 sample posts is abit much. This gig sounds like a great opportunity, i am a green blogger, you can see my 1,000 plus posts on Keetsa.

I will apply and submit all that you request, even if it does sound abit on the demanding side, because i enjoy greatly writing about green living.

Hi Missy, I know it seems

Hi Missy,

I know it seems like I'm asking a bit much, but I'm really only interested in hearing from people who are falling out of their chairs with excitement to apply. The lower barrier to entry, the more crappy applications I get, so asking for people to put a little bit of time into it is a way to save me a lot of time. I'm not interested in hearing from someone who can't pull an hour together to apply for what is going to be a pretty sweet full time job.

I love Keetsa by the way, one of the better green blogs out there.

Shea

Hey Shea, if you're still

Hey Shea, if you're still hanging around, let me just make sure I got this before I get started: in addition to your first 3 requests, you say you need "two 200 words or less posts that you'd write for EarthFirst. Take a look at what we've written about before and write three posts that you'd be excited about publishing to the site." - for a total of 5 sample posts?

Can't wait to write for U here...

Hello, SheaGunther. I'm love this kind of opportunity and can't wait to write for you right away...

For your info, I'm currently own a environment blog at http://willyoumind.blogspot.com and it's been gained some good reputation among the readers.

To be honest, shea. If you want me to comment about your blog, the first thing I'm dislike about earthfirst is the header banner, the banner is quiet messy here (no offense, just telling my thought here...)

Will send you the info asap.

Regards,
Wilson.

Is it two 200 word sample

Is it two 200 word sample posts or three? In the ad you start off saying two, but then you say three posts.

Two sample posts please.

Two sample posts please. Sorry about the mixup on 2/3, I had edited it down from three to two but missed changing the second "three" to "two", fixed up now.

Trashed...

So does that mean you have already trashed several people who have sent you information? It's really not fair to dump people in the trash can for not saying EXACTLY 100 words or less. Are you also saying you're going to count the words and reject out of hand anyone that went over your arbitrary, previously not mentioned, limit?

When will you let people know?

Hello Shea,

I sent in five sample posts because I did not understand what you were looking for. The first commenter, Missy, had mentioned that 5 sample posts seemed like a bit much, and you did not correct her at that point when you replied. I hope I haven't been tossed out for that.

Do you want people to re-apply who misunderstood what you were looking for? Or will you just go by the first two sample posts? If you ignore the last three sample posts, I followed your word limit perfectly!

When will you be letting people know? (I've gotta tell you, I'm chewing nails waiting here. This would be my dream job.) If you decide before Earth Day, I know that *I* would be willing to cover local goings-on with digital camera in hand. ;-) Plus, if you do let people know soon, I have ideas for four or five more pieces I could write for you this week... (I'm sure I'm not the only one.)

Wasted Time

This seemed like an amazing opportunity, but like most of these high paying job postings, it's probably too good to be true. I spent hours getting this guy the info he requested, only to be ignored... he won't even email to say he received my email. I suggest you be wary of people with such high demands, as they are usually high maintenance divas on a power trip. And with his site looking the way it does, I highly doubt the $2500/month paycheck is anything but a dream.
