Looking for 3 bloggers, Tech + Pop. Paid base + traffic bonuses

Submitted by jonez450 on April 22, 2008 - 9:32am in

We are currently looking to fill the following three positions for a soon to be launched blog that will be covering the tech scene (Web 2.0/ social media), pop culture and odd news.

You'll be working with someone extremely well known in the blogging community as a writer, and as part of the opportunity you'll benefit from being able to tap into that experience.

Tech Blogger

You'll have an eye for a interesting story and open Techmeme in the first 5 minutes of getting online in the morning. You may be unknown, or currently writing at a blog network, but you're looking for a new challenge, and a bet on better things.

You'll be able to form an opinion of new web services and are not afraid to call out a terrible company: we're not interested in same-old churn out a press release and say nice things about the company so the PR rep sends more: Honesty is the key. If it sucks and its worth writing about, say so.

Obviously you'll be literate and your English will be first class.

This is an ideal part time position for someone looking for some extra income. The Position pays $250-$500 per month (base- depending on experience) and traffic bonuses. You'll be required to write 3-4 post per day, 5 days a week (Mon-Fri) of varying length.

** While we have no restrictions on where applicants live, you must be online during the US daytime (until 4pm PST anyway): this means you may live in Europe or the United States, but it does disqualify Asia-Australia unless you sleep during the day.

Weekend Tech Blogger

As per the first position but you will write 3-4 posts Friday and Saturday US PST time.

Pop Culture Blogger

You'll enjoy the snarkiness of Perez Hilton and you're not afraid to call a spade a f**king shovel this position is for you. An ideal part time position for someone who loves their pop culture and loves celeb pics and tabloid celebrity gossip.

Although we have no preference about you, our audience will have a strong male slant so it helps that you're comfortable with bikini shots...think slightly classy lads mag meets PopSugar.

Position pays $250-$500/ mth (base- depending on experience) + traffic bonuses.

Positions will be for an initial 3 months with a review at 4 weeks and a renew and pay review at the end of the 3 months. If the model works (and we naturally believe it will) there will be opportunities for increased pay dependent on the site traffic and relative advertising revenue.

Applicants should send a resume and two writing examples (preferably within the area applied for..and published) to jonez450@gmail.com.
Short listing will commence no later than April 28 and applicants should be able to commence blogging at the beginning of May. I apologize in advance if you don't get a response from us: we'll try but the last time I advertised a position I was swamped and couldn't reply to everyone.

Applicants should also have access to Skype for an interview if required, and as payments will be made by Paypal, a Paypal account as well. Payments will be made on a contractor basis so any issues with tax are dependent on you.

If I haven't scared you off yet: applicants should also be happy to take direction and work within a standardized style guide for the site: specifically with images. If you cant use Skitch or Photoshop, you'll struggle in these positions.

Update: due to some travel I've been delayed in processing applications so I'm extending this out till the end of the week (May 2) if people still wish to apply.

Why We're Still Interested In Celebrity News

Celebrities enjoy the lifestyles that many of us only dream about. They live in palatial estates, drive the most expensive automobiles, eat at the best restaurants, and date the most beautiful men and women in the world. Substantial incomes keep them from the worries of budgeting paycheck to paycheck, and their lives appear to be the substance of dreams Or so we think.

Celebrity news fascinates the general public. Whether it's a high profile marriage or divorce, gossip journalists overload our senses with every detail of celebrity doings. Cameras chronicle jetsetters entering and exiting rehab, their stays in jail, and everything from partying in the trendiest night spots to walking the dog. Those of us living less exciting lives devour every news item, keeping gossipers in business with our insatiable appetites for more dirt.

Celebrity news takes us from the boring details of our everyday existence to a world many people never see. Most of us do not mingle in the same circles as Brad and Angelina. We live our lives on the fringes of celebrity escapades, and ridicule when missteps are reported. We are challenged with the struggle to earn even the most modest living, yet we yearn to enjoy some of the basic luxuries that many celebrities take for granted.

We rush to spend hard earned money on products endorsed by our favorite stars. Somehow, it seems that wearing Michael Jordan sneakers or Elizabeth Taylor fragrances makes us less mundane, bringing us a little closer to their world. In reality, we only assist in creating greater wealth for them as our pockets get thinner.

We delight in watching a celebrity's fall from grace. It's not a coincidence that the better selling issues of entertainment magazines are the result of celebrity misfortunes. Ironically, it is then that the star demands respect for privacy, while the public craves every detail of their misfortune. We still talk about whether O.J. did it, the erratic behavior of Britney Spears, and the jailing of Paris Hilton. Entertainment news media fiercely competes for the most outrageous stories to satisfy our appetites for gossip, and mainstream society gobbles up every unsavory tidbit.

Many times, their efforts are intrusive. Celebrities are people just like the rest of us, and when they experience difficulties, the go through the same range of emotions. The celebrity mother fighting for the right to keep her children is no different than mothers appearing in family courts around the country every day. If not for a celebrity having a worse day than ours, it seems we would have nothing interesting to talk about. Maybe knowing that they also have frailties makes us feel better about our own lives.

Celebrities and Destructive Lifestyles

The percentage of celebrities living in crisis is not much different than that of the non-celebrity population. The primary difference is that flaws of the famous are much more visible than those of our friends or family members, who have spent weekends in jail for similar legal infractions. The vast majority of those living in the public eye appreciate where they are in life and learn how to deal with the rigors of celebrity.

The pressures of fame no more contribute to a destructive lifestyle than the pressures of raising a family and wondering how to make ends meet. The emotional stability of the individual is what ultimately determines self appreciation or self depreciation. There are many people who are not famous who are on a path of self destruction. In other words, that same person that has problems as a celebrity would most probably still have problems if they were not famous.

There is very little that can prepare someone for the dramatic life changes that celebrity brings. It becomes even more difficult for a child, who before completing middle school, becomes not only the major bread winner in the family, but also a major corporation upon whom dozens of incomes are dependent.

There is nothing that states that a celebrity should be held to a higher moral or ethical standard than the rest of us. They have not taken vows of celibacy, nor have they sworn to represent our interests in public office. They are simply men and women, and sometimes children, who share the same emotional frailties and short comings that other people experience.

We must always be mindful that sensational media sells. The reason that media outlets bombard us with intimate details of the young and the beautiful is because the general public keeps tuning in. Sometimes, we should ask ourselves whether we would want such an intrusion into our own personal lives.

Sure, many celebrities have chosen to open up their lives for the advancement of their careers. But, what about those who worked hard and struggled just to master their craft? The truth is that no one should be subjected to continuous public scrutiny just for doing their job well, but the reality is that we would rather know what's going on in the life of Britney Spears, than the life of the master plumber who lives down the street from us.

Also a note to the applicants: thanks for your details. I've been sidetracked so I'm pushing shortlisting out to the end of this week. If you're still interested in applying, feel free to do so.
