Minimalism And Me!
Cleaning Up My Space?
While in the dentist’s waiting room I read in some Home/Deco magazine (it didn’t look too old) that there were some studies done that compared us, North Americans to Europeans with regards to our living quarters, furnishings and general inside clutter. It showed that Europeans live in smaller homes (obviously, less available space). They drive smaller and fewer cars (obviously, check out how narrow some of those old roadways are and even Ikea hasn’t figured out how to park even the smallest car in a space made for a bicycle). They also produce less waste (that’s to be expected if you start out with less naturally you’ll have less waste). Throughout all this “less” or should I call it Minimalism they’re supposedly happier on the whole, then us here across the big waters, Americans and Canadians alike.
After coming home with a numb mouth and possibly a drooling problem from the dentists, I looked around me. Now if I were to take that report at face value, and figure out how I can become as happy as them (I haven’t decided that I’m unhappy yet). How would I become one of them Minimalists? What can I change? Obviously I won’t be able to shrink down my home. With gas prices the way they are at the moment, I’m sure not just mine but quite a few cars are seeing way less accumulated mileage. So that takes that issue away.
I’m down to inside furnishings etc., the material stuff that’s lying around the house. Represented are a lot of things that I decided I just had to have. A lot of them are broken promises to myself; I had every intention of using these things to change my life and my lifestyle. This is okay! Let’s start by change that is easily do-able, I’ll minimize by giving up the thread-mill and exercise bike. (Wow! Look at that, I’m happier already).
While I’m at it, what exactly is a minimalist? A minimalist is someone according to the dictionary who:
1. advocates a moderate or conservative approach, action, or policy
2. is a practitioner of minimalism
3. relates to, characteristic of, or in the style of minimalism
4. is or provides a bare minimum of what is necessary
To put that all into my words a minimalist is someone who only has possessions that are necessary, and refrains from buying anything unless there is an immediate need.
Okay! Let’s say I will try to conform to minimalism. I have a feeling that it could get quite overwhelming and nasty. I would think the key to success would be to start small.
My closet would be a good beginning. Looking at each item separately, if they don’t fit now (having given up the exercise equipment… for the sake of my happiness… of course) chances are they will not fit 3 months from now either. But I could remake… Forget about it; simplify is the key here. For an efficient clean-out job, one and all will have to be removed from the closet. What to do with that skeleton or two “hmmm, into in the box for the thrift shop”… (I’m just so overbearing when I’m talking to myself) I’ll need to be strong, my future happiness might be at stake here….
The five discard piles are growing:
• Trash can and recycle bin: anything and everything I was going to fix when I got ‘a-round-to-it’.
• Women’s and children’s shelters: anything that can help rebuild lives is always in need here, from women, children and baby clothes, toys, small household items and blanket and pillows etc.
• Thrift shop box: all good usable items, if someone doesn’t have something even if it’s a bit old fashioned might be better than none. (have to remember no broken or ripped items)
• Church bazaar or white elephant sale: in-tact items, from teacups to knick-knacks, to left over yarn is usually happily accepted.
• Consignment shop: most of these shops take on items that are still in fashion and in good shape from adult to children and baby items too.
• Garage sale: I wonder if I’ll get ambitious enough as to try to sell all this stuff. I just have to remind myself that all the items not sold will need to go to the thrift shop instead of back in the house otherwise all this would be an effort for nothing.
8 days later>>>>>
I did it, wow, walking into an uncluttered room sure feels different it let’s me see and focus on those items that really matter. It is so much easier to clean. A quick sweep with the vacuum and dusting is done in a jiffy with all that clutter and most of those small fiddly knick-knacks gone. It shows off my key-pieces to perfection, that up till now have always just faded into the background. Also, with less clutter my whole living space looks bigger and airier.
Now that I have downsized my belongings to the absolute necessary, I’ll need to initiate a maintenance plan. I need to work up a standard to live by… a strict rule of “one new quality item in, to replace one broken or outlived item out” policy.
Let’s hear it for Minimalism my new beginning

Sunlight: Good? versus Bad?
In Canada, and the rest of the northern hemisphere the days are getting shorter until December 21st. Which makes this the darkest part of the year. Not seing the sun for days at a time can cause some people to feel 'blue' and depressed. For those suffering this affliction, called Seasonal Affected Disorder (SAD), these short and gloomy days of late fall, winter and early spring can be agony.
Not only can reduced exposure to sunlight result in this bio-chemical imbalance but our bodies also need sunlight regularly to produce vitamin D which in turn lets our bones absorb necessairy calcium. Not surprisingly the sun has been called the 'life giving orb' from the beginning of time. It is a proven fact that daily exposure to sunlight reduces stress, improves moods and helps reduce weight caused by water retention etc.
However, regardless of the season, it is important to our systems to get at least 15 to 20 minutes of natural light every single day. (without sunscreen etc.) That's right. While we do need to protect ourselves and watch our sun exposure for long periods of time, our bodies also need full-spectrum natural light daily. Fluorescent and incandescent lights don't give off sufficient enough amount of beneficial rays which our bodies need to provide us with positive health benefits. The most efficient way to reap those benefits is to go outdoors 15-20 minutes a day . Light exposure also boosts serotonin levels which help a body stay alert. But most of all, natural light helps the skin produce the all important vitamin D, which allows the body to absorb calcium, needed for strong bones.
Here is a list of important facts that show why natural sunshine is needed daily:
Sunlight increases endorphins. This means a higher feeling of well being and less depression. (SAD)
Sunlight lowers blood pressure.
Sunlight strengthens the immune system.
Sunlight increases the good cholesterol and lowers the bad.
Sunlight normalises blood sugar, it increases low blood sugar and lowers high blood sugar.
Sunlight is essential for your body to produce vitamin D.
Get 15 to 20 minutes of sunlight or just natural light on your face without screening daily. Sunglasses and contact lenses block most of the needed rays.
Sunlight helps detoxify the liver.
Sunlight increases muscle tone and endurance.
Sunlight speeds up healing.
Sunlight kills germs.
Sun creams greatly limit or completely block the formation of Vitamin D. So give your body the 15 to 20 minutes daily unobstructed exposure to natural light.
How to get those valuable minutes of sunlight on a regular basis. Go outside whenever possible. Take and enjoy a short walk in the morning or in the afternoon with your dog (who by-the-way also needs the natural light daily). Or maybe just sit on the porch and enjoy your coffee or tea outside. These are some of the ways to get the amount of light the body requires safely.
Here is a list to follow for sunlight damage PREVENTION, most of them are the obvious
Sunlight 15 - 20 minutes on exposed skin is good (naturally use common sense in winter months 20 minutes, where as in the height of summer at noon 6 -8 minutes will be enough) sunburn is bad it can cause skin cancer
Too much sunlight will dry out skin.
Too much sunlight will cause premature ageing of skin.
Did you know that most often the damage done to the skin by the sun is done before the age of eighteen. (parents not remembering to protect their childrens skin, the teen slattering themselves with tan oils and sitting in the sun for hour at a time etc.)
Too bright rays causing damage to eyes especially when doubled up by reflection of water or sand.
UV radiation (3 categories as follows UV A, UV B, UV C)
1) UV A, long-wave UV -this radiation is not filtered out in the atmosphere. These rays can pass through glass and will produce some tanning. These are the rays we call natural light and the levels stay relatively constant throughout the day. UV A radiation are the rays we need for our daily dose.
2) UV B, is also the sunburn radiation. Very little is filtered out in the atmosphere by the ozone layer (this is where-in the problem lies, the depleting ozone layer) it does not pass through glass but causes tanning, sunburn, wrinkling, and aging of the skin. Too long an exposure, too often can cause skin cancer. UV B rays are at their highest intensity around noontime and our skin need protection from the most.
3) UV C, short-wave UV -this radiation is mostly filtered out in the atmosphere by the ozone layer (again problems come form the depleting ozone layer)before they reach earth. High exposure of UV C will burn unexposed skin and can cause skin cancer. UV C rays are the rays isolated and used as artificial sources for germicidal lamps. (i.e. artificial UV C rays are used extensively in water purification, air sanitation or filtration systems, used to eliminate molds, bacteria and other contaminants, also commonly used to for surface disinfection for items such as surgery and dentistry tools etc )
The factors that influence the risks of sunlight damage are obviously influenced by skin pigmentation, the ability to tan and the amount of unprotected exposure to sunlight. Protection from the damages all come down to some important facts: using common sense, everything in moderation, wearing protective light clothes and using sun-brellas if necessary especially if ones job is working out-of-doors.

Hair, Hair Everywhere!
What is hair anyway? Hair is the body covering of mammals growing through the dermis.
It is made up of a protein called Keratin and amino acids.
Hair: A worthy commodity!
Beautiful and plentiful Hair has been, and is a most sought after commodity in the human sector of mammals.
Hair: To Have Or Not To Have!
Well by saying "...it is sought after" I mean to say it is wanted on the top not so much further down on some chins (definitely not on the female one). Still keeping with the girlies and going further south, pits, legs, etc... the hair or fur is scraped, creamed or ripped away by the roots.
Hair: Worth Mega Bucks!
Hair is a multi billion dollar industry world wide. Job opportunities in hair are many. The hairstylists being the most obvious. Then there are the chemists that work out the proper hair care products and dyes. Mechanical and technical careers are a mega part of the 'hair-movement' when you consider the many types of cutting and styling tools that are used on hair. Scissors, manual and electrical razors, hair dryers and curling irons, hair straighteners. Even the sewing sector comes into the mix by manufacturing hair-scrunchies, bands, bows etc.
Hair in entertainment and music:
Not even the entertainment and music field has to feel left out as there are many productions focusing around the fuzzy stuff. The musicals 'Hair' and 'Hairspray'. If you remember the movie 'Shampoo' with Warren Beatty you're as old as me. Some of the hair-band groups Montly Crue, Poison, Skid Row just to mention a few from the top of my head....
I can't get no satisfaction No satisfaction.... with my hair
Head-Hair is one of those things that most are not satisfied with. Either too straight, too curly, too fuzzy, too dark, too gray, too thin, too.................. therefore it is nurtured, fertilized into growth , colored, straightened, permed into curls, trained into forming helmets, scrapped off with sharp implements or removed by the roots by high tech laser treatments.
The lack of is either treated with plugs, rugs, comb-overs or embraced with a spit and polish. (Mind you, according to one of my Dads favorite sayings "There is no such thing as a bald head, only one with a forehead that reaches the ass-end... translated from Hungarian)
Hair perspectives!
Tell me honestly when was the last time you let your hair down? That's what I thought, so why don't you keep your hair on for crying out loud don't tear your hair out by the roots, it's not as if it's a hair raising affair, even though you might think your hair is standing on end and that your hair is on fire but believe me you don't want to be splitting hairs over it all because it really is only a bad hair day, but I think it's as fine as frog hair however it really runs against the hair grain when you say you want me to run my fingers through your hair weave when in fact I should be using the hair of the dog that bit you instead.
The List Of Uses For Hair:
15 Common uses for Hair!!!
Warmth: first and foremost the 'noggin' needs to be kept warm (can be replaced by toque)
Trophy: scalp on the belt (attractive to accessorize any casual outfit especially great with deer skin garments)
Garden fertilizer: aerates dirt when mixed with clay (collect by the garbage bags full from the local barber and hairstylists shops---a green alternative to save the landfill sites)
Veggie protector: sprinkle hair around vegetable garden twice during growing season to keep rabbits and deer from stealing the crop (collect by the garbage bags full from the local barber and hairstylists shops---a green alternative to save the landfill sites)
Building Material: Birds like to use it in their nest fabrication. It was also used as an additive to plaster walls, all for strengths.
Music: Horsetail-hair perfectly strong for bowstrings for the Violin bow
Fabric/Upholstery: Horse-Hair-Cloth as an interfacing for suits and coats, stuffing in furniture hair mixed with jute and hemp was a norm yesteryear. Soft animal hair used in the making of felt for hats etc
Ladder: For directions on how this item can be used you need to contact Rapunzel 'www.Rapunzel-let-your-hair-down'. (If she's in a bad mood and says "not by the hair of my chinny chin chin" try, try and try again.
Luck Forecaster: In Poland if you pass 3 pure red-head in a row you will be rich because you will win the lottery.
Boy or Girl Forecaster : This one has a 50% accuracy rate--- if the hair on the expectant mother grows faster then it did before it is a sure chance of 50 % of being a boy. ( the nursery will look awesome in a mellow butter yellow or a snazzy light mint green just in case its either a boy or a girl)
Weather Forecaster: If the cats bushy tail is up and the hair on it instead of standing up on end is flattened to one side that means it's windy.
Love meter reader: In France a bat in the hair will tell of a disastrous love affair (bat is called chauve-souris in French translated meaning bald mouse--- in all honesty it really is not surprising, a bald mouse hanging from either male or female hair is not that appealing)
Replacement for Psychiatrist: In Missourri folklore tells that a hair in the hair leads to insanity (no doubt)
Strength: Hair stands for immense strength (just ask Samson he had none after he received a fashionable hair cut)
Magic: A mermaids magic is in her hair (next time you see one sitting on a rock at the ocean side ask her, with all that salt water I would really like to know how they keep their hair so healthy and soft looking)

Hi-
I am very interested in this position, is it still open? I have blogged for a scientific outreach project and I'm looking to expand my experience to include more types of blogging. My talents are taking random topics and transforming them into interesting, understandable, and fun blogs.
I'm a biologist by day, and Martha Stewart fan by night. I grew up in a progressive area so I'm well versed in sustainable lifestyles.
I'd be happy to send more information by email.
Thanks for your time, and please let me know if you have any questions for me!
I won't desecrate for $5...
And I won't pontificate over this "job" for more than a second either, for $5, you don't even get my name!
I'd rather ruminate over ways to come up with funny words for this for free!
Maybe we can postulate?
Copulate?
Oh no, I'm going too far... Please allow me to predicate the perfectibility of humanity by being on my merry way.
