 What Yahoo! Pipes Really Mean

Submitted by Nick Wilson on February 8, 2007 - 8:26pm in

Every tech blog worth their salt are talking about Yahoo! Pipes, but if you really want to understand the significance of this programmable OS then check out Tim O'Reilly's piece.

As soon as the service is back up, head on over and build something awesome :)

 Where's the WTF'ing RSS?

Submitted by Nick Wilson on February 1, 2007 - 8:06pm in

I'll be the first to admit that maybe I just don't get Technorati's WTF, Im still trying to work out what the purpose is and whether it's really useful, but one thing I did notice, is that there is no rss feed!

If im understanding this right, it's popular topics at Technorati anotated by the community to "explain the buzz" -- and if that's right, then why can't I get this in Google Reader?

Do tell...

Snap Respond to my Anti Preview Anywhere Post, but Popups Still Annoying

Submitted by Nick Wilson on February 1, 2007 - 12:03pm in

Snap's Jason Fields has responded to my anti SPA post which got Dugg and consequently garnered unexpected, but appreciated support in the broader community.

In a nutshell, our product is intended to enable users to “look before leaping”, saving many people a wasted click. I will however be the first to admit that this is a product that some people don’t like, and this is why we have made sure to include a simple method to opt-out for those who don’t like it (click the ‘options’ menu in the upper right of the preview bubble).

While there are certainly others who agree with some of the comments here, there are literally thousands of people signing up for SPA every day AND we have served more than 100+ million previews since the launch of the product – and all of this for free.

We are improving SPA almost every week with features aimed at giving site owners and end-users greater control in how to implement (and indeed “if” to implement) and interact with SPA. In the weeks to come, we will be:

(1) Making improvements that will reduce the confusion about whether a link is SPA enabled, or not.
(2) Make it much easier for a site owner to point SPA to a particular type of link.
(3) Enabling the site owner to totally customize a link, image, css, etc.

We here at Snap are acutely aware of the issues described in these comments and we have several enhancements scheduled to release over the coming couple of weeks that, in different ways, will address them. Rest assured that your viewpoints have been informing, and will continue to inform, the ongoing development of this product.

This is all well and good Jason, but the inescapable truth is that popups are annoying., and no amount of hopeful evangelistic cosmetcs will change that.

Looking for a Hosting Sponsor for Performancing Community

Submitted by Nick Wilson on January 31, 2007 - 3:33pm in

Im looking for a hosting company that has great offerings for bloggers, one we'd be proud to recommend and could do so with conviction, as you'd be hosting our community on a well spec'd dedicated LAMP server.

Please remove Partners Code from your Blogs

Submitted by Nick Wilson on January 31, 2007 - 3:25pm in

As I beleive eveyone knows, our ad network closes today. Please remove the code from your blogs , but do watch this space. I dont/cant make promises, but i really believe we had something with the Partners program and that with a little tweaking, and the right kind of partnership, we could make this profitable for publishers and us, right out of the gate.

If you want to talk to me about that, email performancing@gmail.com

  • Final Publisher payments and commissions have been made.
  • Advertiser refunds are in progress.
  • Please dont contact me about either for at 48hrs but if you do suspect an error, or need help, email performancing@gmail.com early next week. Thanks!

Im sorry it came to this guys, next time we do something, we'll get it right :)

Ok so Im hooked on Google Reader

Submitted by Nick Wilson on January 31, 2007 - 10:23am in

A couple of days ago I asked "why do you use Google Reader", I've been hearing that it's improved for a long time now, and we get many referals from it here. After getting some damn good reasons for using it in that thread, i turned off Liferea, my Ubuntu/Gnome reader of chioce and decided to climb the learning curve of GReader.

Im very, very glad I did. Thankyou to all who helped get me on track in that thread.

Google Reader is without doubt, the fastest, most useful hosted RSS reader for the professional blogger in existence. It makes Bloglines look rather kludgy and dated.

If you've not tried it recently, i highly recommend you do so!

MyBlogLog getting Spammed? No Shit Sherlock...

Submitted by Nick Wilson on January 30, 2007 - 8:22pm in

Why it surprises Yahoo's Jeremy Zawodny that an exploit in newly acquired MyBlogLog is already being exploited by marketers and seo's is beyond me. The fact that Andy Beal and quite a number of other folks are using MBL to spam blogging communities is just the inevitable consequence of the service going mainstream. Opportunities are exploited, fact of life.

Jeremy, hitting Andy's reputation will sort him out for sure, but you can't do it to everyone -- time to start plugging holes in the MBL system wouldn't you say?

Oh God No... More Blog Bling from Yahoo!

Submitted by Nick Wilson on January 30, 2007 - 4:13pm in

Barry points out that Yahoo! are dishing out link trinkets for those who just can't keep the bling off their pages. You can see ours below:

Apparently, if you put this on your pages, wish really hard, and click your heels together three times, you'll be a popular blogger...

 SpamCast

Submitted by Nick Wilson on January 30, 2007 - 12:20pm in

I'd say I knew a thing or two about the need to monetize a startup. I've learnt the hardway, and watched several projects get canned from not building income streams in concert with development and production. However, reading over at Techcrunch that Splashcast is finally launching, and because im really working hard at finding a way to let people embed podcasts i make on their sites or share them etc, I headed over to have a look --- what greeted me? Shitloads of spammy links designed to get clicks for high paying phrases which have nothing to do with podcasting, vlogging or any oher kind of media creation.

These are the links I see at the bottom of the homepage:

Popular Categories: Medical Equipment | Medical Identification | Medical Clothing | Cheap Airfare | Vacation | Discount Airline Ticket

And where do they lead? To spammy pages full only of click ads, with yet more spammy links leading to yet more spammy pages.

What the fuck is going on here? Are these people insane?

I mean shit, how did this conversation go?

Splashcastguy: Hey, we launch tomorrow, im stoked!
SplashcastMoneyGuy: Yeh, me too, but how are we going to make money?
Splashcastguy: Oh, i got that covered. We thought we'd do a mullenweg, but not actually hide the spammy links, so we wont get slammed for it.
SplashcastMoneyGuy: Neato! And our users will just love it, good job!

Give me strength.

Loren Nails It, And Why You Wont Hear me Say "Linkbait" Again

Submitted by Nick Wilson on January 30, 2007 - 10:39am in

And that, is why you wont here me say "linkbait" on this blog anymore. A term invented way back in 2004 to describe really cool, linkable content has become synonymous with "dirty tactics" -- bugger that, time to kill this term dead.

Well said Loren.

3 Reasons Why Snap Preview is Ruining Your Blog, and Hurting Your Readership

Submitted by Nick Wilson on January 30, 2007 - 9:20am in

Welcome Digg readers, you can grab this sites RSS Feed here.

Snap's preview anywhere gizmo is ruining the reading experience for millions of people. Its intrusive, obstructive and unuseful in almost every respect and use case. The fact that so many big blogs are using it, big well respected blogs, does not mean that it's useful, it just means that they, like most bloggers, have all the self restraint of a magpie in a sparkly things factory.

That's not to say im any better, but it is true. As a group , most bloggers are only a small step away from the flashing, rotating logos of 1997 or the neon pink backgrounds and blaring teen pop auto play bollocks of your average 17yr old MySpace user -- and I include myself, though i dont use SPA, im as guilty as the next blogger of "bling envy".

Let me point out a few truths about Snap Preview Anywhere, in the vain hope that this misguided 'helper application' will die a quick death as we all start to see the sense of a usable website as opposed to a trinket magnet for the design challenged.

Amazing that Community Members Will Invent their own Badges!

Submitted by Nick Wilson on January 29, 2007 - 11:09pm in

With partners about to be turned off, it's amazing that at least one Performancing member would want to show his support for the community regardless and modify our house ads to display a kind of "community badge" -- See the right hand side near the top on the link above.

Thanks Kirk!

Why do you use Google Reader?

Submitted by Nick Wilson on January 29, 2007 - 3:43pm in

I've been reading a lot of comments in the last couple of months raving about how good Google Reader is, and how it just beats Bloglines hands down.

From a professional bloggers point of view, what's all the fuss about?

 Firefox Developer Needed for ScribeFire

Submitted by Nick Wilson on January 28, 2007 - 8:42pm in

ScribeFire, our blog editor for Firefox has been downloaded over 1/2 a million times. It's a really, really cool, open source project.

Unfortunately, our current developer, Jed Brown has gone MIA, and though we all hope he's safe, and worry about him, we have to move on nonetheless. ScribeFire really, really needs to get up to speed with Blogger Beta, the new Wordpress API's and a whole ton of other stuff to stay current, and stay on the Mozilla recommended plugins list.

I'm looking for an FF dev that thinks she/he can take ScribeFire to the next level. If that sounds like you, we'd REALLY like to hear from you! Just drop me a line at performancing@gmail.com

I'll also be emailing a few of the Mozilla folks for help.

Suggestions, help and pointers most welcome!
