The performancing.com editor was huge success for performancing.com! A good idea is and always was a desktop wallpaper with a calendar. The picture can fit to the forum niche, might be from a user content and brings users back every month. In many niches there are special software packages or other products available. Try to make your new forum a forum for that product. Esp. try to get the author, developer or product manager to participate.
